How the current average is determined:

In order for a poll to be included in the current average, the following conditions must be met:

  • When multiple respondent types are available, they will be used in the following order of preference.

Likely voters > Registered voters > Adults

  • All polls with a release/embargo time of 8PM ET or earlier will be added to the average by 11:59PM ET the same day.

  • Poll results will be included in the following order of preference.

Clinton vs Trump, Clinton vs Trump vs Johnson vs Stein, Clinton vs Trump vs Johnson.

Please note that some pollsters may do a ‘forced’ option where respondents do not get to select other/undecided.

A forced result will only be used if the pollster does not present any unforced data.

In the event a forced result is used, the same order of preference applies.

  • A poll will be removed from the current average when its last day of polling is more than two weeks old.

For example, a poll that was conducted 7/1-7/4 (Mon) would be removed from the average on 7/19 (Tues)

  • The number of polls in the average must always be no less than four. This overrides the removal of polls as stated above.

  • If a poll is due to be dropped but must remain due to above minimum poll rule, it will be replaced by the next poll.

  • No more than one occurrence of the same pollster will occur in the current average.

  • The poll must be included in the list of pollsters referenced below. We reserve the right to add/remove pollsters from this list, however, there will be a 30-day waiting period from the day we post a dated notification here until those polls are added/removed from any current average.

  • Clarification 8/10/2016: If the Clinton vs. Trump question is asked two times, with the first time being overall preference, and the second time being overall preference with leaners, we will use overall preference without leaners.

  • *Effective 10/15/2016 - Emerson polling data will no longer be used in our averages.
